Fargo AirSho without main act after Blue Angels cancel season

FARGO – The Blue Angels have canceled their appearance at the Fargo AirSho, leaving organizers scrambling to figure out whether they can pull off the Aug. 10-11 event without their top act.

AirSho committee co-chairman Dick Walstad said he received a call Monday night from a Blue Angels’ liaison breaking the news.

“This is a huge blow to the Fargo AirSho Committee,” Walstad said. “But it’s the old story: If you have lemons, you try to make lemonade out of it.”

On its website, the Blue Angels posted a news release saying the Navy has canceled its remaining 2013 performances, citing federal budget cuts.

Walstad said he and other organizers don’t want to cancel the Fargo AirSho and are looking at the possibility of holding a fly-in of World War II warbirds to complement the air show performers who are already signed to contracts and the dedication of the Fargo Air Museum’s new Beck-Odegaard Wing aircraft hangar addition.

“I think there’s an opportunity here to put on a pretty good event,” he said.

Walstad said he hopes the AirSho committee can finalize plans by the end of next week.
