Fargo makes plea for sandbag volunteers today and tonight
FARGO - Volunteers are needed today starting at 12:30 p.m. to begin dike building. Volunteers are asked to report to Assembly of God Church, 3401 25th St S, Fargo. Park in the lot on the west side of the building - buses will pick up volunteers and take them out to the dike sites.
Volunteers are also still needed at Sandbag Central, where operations are running on a 24 hour basis. Pat Zavoral, City Administrator, says "so far, we have 310,000 bags filled and ready to go, but that's a long way from the 1.5 million sandbags we need to fight this flood."
People who can fill sandbags during the day are asked to call the Volunteer Hotline number at 476-4000. Park at the Fargodome, and buses will shuttle to Sandbag Central.
There is a critical need for volunteers in the evening and overnight hours also - the new bag filling machines need a minimum of 150 volunteers to run continuously, so it's vital to have enough people to keep those machines going, according to a city news release.
After 8 p.m., no need to call the Volunteer Hotline - just park at the Fargo Dome and buses will shuttle to Sandbag Central.
