Fargo man receives 3 years in prison for son's injuries
FARGO - A judge has sentenced a 39-year-old man to serve three years in prison for incidents that left his then 3-month-old son with multiple skull fractures and broken ribs.
Corey Wade Cowdrey, Fargo, initially denied hurting the boy but later admitted to dropping the infant head-first and to hitting the baby with a closed fist when he wouldn't stop crying, Cass County District Court documents state.
Cowdrey initially faced two Class B felony charges of child abuse or child neglect, but prosecutors dismissed one of the charges after Cowdrey pleaded guilty in December.
Prosecutor Ryan Younggren had asked East Cen-tral Judicial District Judge John Irby to sentence Cowdrey to eight years in prison.
"Here we have really a man who should have known better," said Younggren, an assistant Cass County state's attor-ney.
Defense attorney Bruce Quick argued for one year in jail, saying his client has no priors and has taken responsibility for his actions.
Quick also cited more than 20 character letters submitted on Cowdrey's behalf.
"A year in the county jail is a serious sentence," Quick argued.
