Fargo police arrest man they say fled accident scene after racing friend home

Robert Lundstrom, 38, of Dallas Center, Iowa, was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident and hindering law enforcement.

FARGO - Police say two men were racing their pickups on the way home early this morning when one of them lost control, hit a pickup and fled the scene.

According to Sgt. Glen Hanson:

Police responded at 2:12 a.m. to a hit-and-run accident near the intersection of Gold Drive and 18th Street South.

A parked Dodge pickup had been struck by a full-size Chevy pickup, which left the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver who fled the scene sitting on a balcony of a nearby apartment complex.

Officers found the Chevy pickup in the parking lot at 2100 21st Ave. They later located its owner, Robert Lundstrom, 38, of Dallas Center, Iowa, hiding in a third-floor hallway of the building.

"He was visiting friends, and he was racing those friends home when he lost control and rammed into the pickup truck," Hanson said.

Lundstrom was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident and hindering law enforcement and taken to the Cass County Jail.

The driver of the other pickup, Daniel Reece, 24, of Fargo, was arrested on suspicion of obstructing and released. He initially claimed that he didn't know anything about the accident or who Lundstrom was, Hanson said.

Lundstrom had removed the license plates from his pickup and put them behind the seat, but his DirecTV employee ID was in the pickup along with other paperwork with his name on it, Hanson said. The pickup's front end was damaged and had white paint marks from the vehicle it struck, he said.

Lundstrom and Reece are listed as the owners of the pickups they were driving, Hanson said. Reece's pickup had a DirecTV sticker on it, he said.

Lundstrom had been drinking alcohol, but he didn't meet the threshold to be arrested for driving under the influence, Hanson said.

The parked pickup truck had significant damage, including a broken rear axle, Hanson said.
