FARGO - Police here arrested a Duluth, Minn., man on suspicion of terrorizing after he allegedly tried to walk off with a car seat carrying a baby Sunday night in south Fargo, Sgt. Jeff Skuza said.

The baby was not injured.

The mother had just pulled into her garage when the incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. in the 5200 block of Amber Valley Parkway.

According to Skuza:

The mother took the car seat carrying the 6-week-old child out of its base and set it on the ground so she could attend to another child in the vehicle.

When her back was turned, she noticed a man approach and look at the baby. The man got closer and picked up the carrier and started to walk off with it.

The mother grabbed the carrier and tried to pull it away from the man. The tug-of-war continued until the man's friend, whom he'd been talking to by another garage before the incident, intervened and convinced him to let go of the carrier.

The suspect, Tyler Ray Nord, 20, fled before police arrived. West Fargo police located him about 2½ hours later while investigating a report of a suspicious man walking through a yard, and Fargo police arrested him at 11:16 p.m., Skuza said.

Police have recommended Nord face charges of terrorizing and attempted kidnapping, both felonies, he said.

Skuza said the mother handled the situation well by physically resisting and trying to start a conversation with the man.

Nord is being held in the Cass County Jail.
