Farmers markets: two now open - People's Park, The Depot
A sure sign that spring has finally sprung for the lakes area is the fact that not one, but two local farmers markets are open in Detroit Lakes.
The Detroit Lakes Farmers Market has a new location this year, on the east lawn of the historic railroad depot on the northwest corner of Highway 10 and Washington Avenue. The group decided to relocate to a more visible location this year, after setting up shop in the parking lot of the Boys & Girls Club Thrift Store for the past couple of summers.
Meanwhile, the Lakes Area Farmers Market will continue to be located in Peoples Park behind Zorbaz, where it relocated a couple of years ago from its former home in City Park.
Both markets will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays this summer, with the DL Farmers Market running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days, through the last Saturday in September. The Lakes Area Farmers Market is trying out some new hours this summer. Though its Saturday hours will still be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Tuesdays, the market will offer “split hours,” with one group of vendors participating from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and another group from 4 to 7 p.m.
The DL Farmers Market offers not only seasonal, fresh produce, grown locally, but also environmentally friendly cleaning supplies, quality crafts made by local artisans, homemade jams and jellies, organic herbal teas, homemade maple syrup, fresh meats, bedding plants, Georgia pecans and bakery products.
The Lakes Area Farmers Market will have fresh fruits and veggies, meat, honey, soaps, potted plants, rugs and other crafts, and a variety of baked items. New this year is a vendor with a professional baking kitchen that will be used to produce fresh lefse, cookies, cupcakes and other baked goods for sale.
