GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The federal stimulus package to be signed into law today by President Barack Obama will save or create 8,000 jobs in North Dakota and 66,000 in Minnesota, according to a state-by-state assessment released by the White House.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $789 billion for efforts to create or save 3.5 million jobs nationwide over the next two years.

Jobs created will be more than 90 percent in the private sector and in a range of industries, from clean energy to health care, according to the White House.

The package passed Congress despite no Republican votes in the House and only three in the Senate. Republicans objected that it fell short on cutting taxes and its spending plans are not sufficiently focused on short-term job creation.

Obama is scheduled to sign the measure today in Denver.
