Feldt back at state
Detroit Lakes senior Alex Feldt had to endure one of the most difficult situations a high school wrestler has to go through -- grappling in the True Second match after losing in the championship bout.
A wrestler needs to build himself back up quickly after suffering the disappointment of losing in the championship match, just to save a chance to earn a berth in the state meet.
But the 171-pound Feldt was able to persevere through the peaks and valleys of the Section 8-2A individual tournament in Cass Lake-Bena. He clinched his second-consecutive state berth by winning his True Second match over Jesse Laugen of Fergus Falls, 6-5.
Feldt lost to Dylan Shequen of Staples-Motley in the title tilt by a 7-5 decision.
"I was pretty down on myself after losing in the championship match," Feldt said. "I was not looking forward to wrestling again in the True Second match.
"But about five to 10 minutes before the True Second, I decided if I don't pull myself together, I'm not going to state."
The True Second bout was a close one, with Feldt having to have to dig out from an early 2-0 deficit after a Laugen takedown in the first period.
"I knew as soon as I got taken down, I had my work cut out for me," Feldt added.
An escape cut the Otter lead to 2-1, with Feldt gaining a 3-2 edge on a takedown in the second.
Laugen regained the advantage 5-3, but the Laker senior pulled off an escape, followed by a take down for the 7-5 lead.
With seven seconds remaining, Feldt cut Laugen and rode him out for the victory.
"I just had an ecstatic feeling when it was over," Feldt said.
The 171-pound class was basically three deep, as Feldt wrestled both Laugen and Shequen.
"The top three wrestlers at 171 were tougher than nails," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott.
Feldt heads into the Class 2A state meet with some state experience from last year.
This year's state event will be held Wednesday through Saturday inside the Xcel Energy Center.
Feldt, who has a record of 34-7, will open the tournament against Zack Rutt (25-5) of Montgomery/Lonsdale/LeCenter.
"Last year I had those state jitters, so I shouldn't have those this time," Feldt said. "The way I wrestle, I feel I match up well at state. Some of them may have five to six pounds on me, but I will be a lot quicker."
Feldt finishes his DL career as a top five wrestler in Laker history, with 115 wins.
"Al just has been a big part of what we've done here the last several years," Ullyott said.
Mike Bellefeuille finished third at 119 pounds for DL, while seventh grader Parker Jackson was fourth at 125.
"Ben Gailfus and Tony Sims, who were both unseeded, placed in section and those are very good finishes for each of them," Ullyott said.
The Lakers placed a total of seven wrestlers at sections.
