Feldt wrestles for two wins in state meet; Johnson ends tournament in prelims
ST. PAUL - It was a productive Class 2A state wrestling meet for Detroit Lakes junior Alex Feldt.
Feldt claimed his first-ever state victory in the prelims, pinning Jesse Munos of South St. Paul in 3:39.
Feldt faced Totino-Grace's Anthony Gullickson in the quarterfinals, where the Laker lost on a 13-6 decision.
In the wrestlebacks, Feldt notched his second state win with a pin on Mora's Blake Menard in 1:18, before losing to New London-Spicer's John Nething 14-5 to end his tournament.
In Feldt's win over Munos, he was able to put the South St. Paul wrestler on his back in the second period with the score tied 2-2.
"Alex did a good job wrestling and not clamming up," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott.
Senior Brandon Johnson's state tournament was ended prematurely in the 189-pound division, losing to junior Rip Baker of Milaca/Faith Christian on a 15-0 technical fall.
Baker's wrestling style was new to Johnson, which included the cheap-tilt move.
"It was a roller," Ullyott said of Johnson's match. "(Baker) was a cheap-tilt type of wrestler and Brandon has not seen that kind of style during this season. It was just a style deal, you never know what you're going to see down here."
Baker lost his quarterfinal match, thus ending Johnson's tournament.
