Fergus Falls down Lakers 13-1 in Section semifinals
FERGUS FALLS -- Despite piling on 13 hits and 13 runs on the Detroit Lakes baseball team, the Section 8-2A's top-seeded Fergus Falls Otters used a little-less potent weapon in their offensive arsenal to break open the semifi-nal tilt Tuesday -- the bunt.
After two scoreless in-nings by DL senior lefty Alex Guetter and trailing 1-0 in Fergus Falls, the Otters put down back-to-back bunts by Alex Hensch and Dan Revering to key a seven-run third inning on their way to a 13-1 victory in five in-nings.
The big seven-run frame was backed by a six-run fifth, which was promptly ended on a walk-off grand slam by Pete Gaustad, which invoked the 10-run mercy rule.
But it was the consecu-tive bunts, which set up the Otters for the lead, one resulting in a throwing error by Guetter and an-other a dribbler down third base line for a hit to load the bases.
From there, Fergus Falls picked up four straight batters who picked up RBIs, including a two-run double by Darin Stanislowski.
The inning also served as one in which Guetter threw well over 25 pitches, as the Otters bat-ted through the order, plus four batters.
Seniors T.J. Manning and Andy Fonderick fin-ished up in relief duty, as the Otters salted away the victory.
The Lakers had several early opportunities to lay claim to a larger lead than their 1-0 after two innings, but stranded five runners on the bases in the first three innings.
Danny Engberg scored DL's lone run in the top of the first, thanks to two Otter errors.
Sophomore lefty Zach Rengel pitched the entire five innings, giving up six scattered hits, striking out five and walking two.
Manning had two of DL's six hits.
For the Otters, Gaustad collected five RBIs on just one hit -- the big one, of course coming off the grand slam.
Each of Trevor Larson, Hensch and Trent Toso had two hits apiece.
The Lakers will play Staples-Motley in the fi-nals play-in game in Fergus Falls at noon Thursday for the right to face the Otters in the championship game.
The winner will have to beat the Otters twice, with the first game being played Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
If necessary, the second game will be played Friday at 3 p.m. at a site to be de-termined.
