FERGUS FALLS - A man is in custody after fleeing from a deputy sheriff early this morning after being stopped for a traffic violation and making a suspicious movement that prompted the officer to fire gunshots.

The chain of events began at 2:10 a.m. after a deputy from Pope County dropped someone off at the detoxification center in Fergus Falls.

As the officer was leaving, he spotted a car going the wrong way along Highway 210. After stopping the car, the driver was unable to produce a driver's license.

The deputy began questioning the driver, and then what began as a routine traffic stop turned into something more, said Tim Brennan, chief of the Fergus Falls Police Department.

"The driver made a very quick and sudden movement with his hand which held something that the officer thought might be a gun," Brennan said.

The deputy fired two shots at the car as the driver sped off, collided with a snow bank about a block away, then fled on foot. The driver was taken into custody and taken to the local hospital, where he was treated for a foot injury and released, Brennan said.

Suspected narcotics were found at the scene, and the driver is being held on outstanding warrants. Police are seeking a warrant to search the car, and an agent from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is en route to help with the investigation.

Two passengers in the car are being questioned as witnesses, Brennan said.

No further details were available this morning, including the identity of the driver or deputy.
