Financial Peace University offers money lessons
Is your New Year's resolution to get your finances in order? Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University might be the answer.
In 2009, Susie and Zach Felt went through the program, and this year they are coordinating the program.
"It totally changed our lives," Susie Felt said of their experience with the program. "It teaches you principles that help you to figure out how to pay off debt, how to save money. It even goes through things like insurance, investing -- which that kind of stuff is sometimes confusing to people. It was confusing to me before I went to the class. I know a lot more now than before I went through the class.
"It can be for singles or couples."
Financial Peace University is a step-by-step process taught by best-selling author and financial counselor Dave Ramsey. It is a 12-week program that begins with a video from Ramsey, and then participants break into small groups to discuss the video and any other questions they may have about finances.
The class will meet every Tuesday evening for 12 weeks, so Felt said it is a time commitment because everyone is expected to be at each session to get the full benefit of the program.
"What Dave (Ramsey) says is that change takes time, so if they are able to come to as many classes as possible, it helps," she said.
To see if the program is for you, there are two free preview informational meetings scheduled. They are Sunday, Jan. 16, at noon in Lakes Area Vineyard Church or Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Library.
"They are preview sessions to show people a little bit more about the class," she said. "Then they will have the opportunity to sign up if they want to."
There is a preview and the listing of what each class is about at http://www.daveramsey.com/fpu/preview.
The first lesson then can also be taken for free, she said.
"That is something Financial Peace is offering."
That session is on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m.
"Then if they decide they want to continue with it, we'd have to order them the materials," she said.
