Finnish group performs Friday at NYM

The Twin Cities-based Saana Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 22 in the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. This five-member vocal group performs traditional Finnish folk tunes with a modern twist. They perform both accompanied and a capella music in the Finnish language. Memorial Day services sponsored by the Perham VFW Post 4020 and American Legion Post 61 and their Auxiliaries will be held at the ITOW Veterans Museum on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. The museum will be open all day on Memorial Day, with no charge to visit the exhibits. From 7 a.m. to noon there will be an "all you can eat" Dad's Belgian Waffle Breakfast hosted by the Masonic lodges of Perham and Wadena. Tickets are $6 in advance or $6.50 at the door. Children age 5 and younger eat free. The breakfast includes waffles, sausage, flavored syrups and beverages. Proceeds from the breakfast go to support the ITOW Veterans Museum and Masonic local scholarships. Other upcoming events at the museum include the opening of the exhibit "Images of Valor: Latinos and Latinas in World War II," on June 8; and a "Tribute to Big Bands" concert by the Ministry of Jazz on June 15. Donna Chalimonczyk, a watermedia artist from Moorhead, will be exhibiting her work at the Detroit Lakes Library through the end of May. Her paintings include a wide variety of subjects including landscapes, still life, people and abstracts. Donna began painting in 1990 when she joined the Cormorant Area Art Club and was living near Lake Park. She continues her membership in the CAAC, where she attends workshops and displays her work during their July art show. She is also a member of the Red River Watercolor Society, F-M Visual Artists and the Hjemkomst Center Artists' Studio in Moorhead.

The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall is coming to the Chas. D. Center VFW Post 3289 in New York Mills from June 3-8. The arrival of "The Wall" will be Wednesday, June 3, with a motorcade escort beginning in Wadena on Highway 10 until it reaches the VFW, located just outside of New York Mills. The Wall will be open to the public on Thursday, June 4, with an opening ceremony set for 11 a.m. The Wadena Area Concert Band will perform that evening at 7 p.m. in the NYM bandshell. While the traveling wall is in New York Mills there will be special programs each day at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Guards will be posted 24 hours a day and there will be many performances, presentations and speeches to honor veterans through the 4-day event.  For more information call 218 385-3510 or 218 346-7678 or visit www.ITOWmuseum.org.

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center is hosting its 13th annual non-juried Regional Art Show from now through June 5. Eighty works, including oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings; photographs; mixed media; sculpture and drawings represent more than 40 artists from Minnesota and the Dakotas. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The Center is located at 24 Main Avenue North in New York Mills. The four finalists have been selected for the 2009 Great American Think-Off, set for Saturday, June 13 at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. The finalists were chosen based upon their essays submitted in response to the question, "Is it ever wrong to do the right thing?" Arguing on the "yes" side of the debate will be George Holly of Tucson, Ariz., and John Pollock of Montgomery, Ala. Tackling the "no" argument will be Erik Schultz of Vienna, Va., and Rick Nichols of Leavenworth, Kan. The debate is set to begin at 7 p.m. on June 13 inside the James W. Mann Performing Arts Auditorium. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
