Fire ruins Frazee family's belongings

A house fire that killed a cat and a dog in a Frazee home Wednesday remains under investigation.

The Frazee Fire Department responded to the fire on the 400 block of Ash Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. Firefighters took about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames, Frazee Fire Chief Paul Thon said.

"It's pretty safe to say it was 1,000 degrees in there," he said.

Residents of the house -- Adam and Kelly Splonskowski and their three children, Connor, Alex and Gabbi -- were not home at the time. A neighbor reported the fire when he smelled smoke.

The family of five is now staying with relatives in the Frazee area until they figure out what to do next.

They lost all personal property in addition to their two pets.

"I don't know how bad it is structurally, but almost anything personal inside the house is a total loss," Adam Splonskowski said.

He was told by State Fire Marshal officials that the fire may have been caused by an electric light fixture in the basement.

His wife, Kelly, wasn't too far from the house. She happened to be paying a bill at city hall when a neighbor walked in and said the house on the corner was on fire.

The 1.5-story home received the most damage in the main floor bathroom and bedroom, Adam Splonskowski said.

"Everything is black inside. It's not pretty," he added.

The Splonskowskis are hoping to rebuild or remodel the home, depending on the information they receive from their insurance company.

State Fire Marshal officials along with local officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

Also responding to the fire were the Frazee Rescue Squad and firefighters from Detroit Lakes, Wolf Lake and Vergas.
