The Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics is hoping to get the community together at the Detroit Lakes High School football field Saturday evening.

Gates open at 5 p.m., and the cartwheeling event will happen at 6 p.m..

Jen Smith, who is on the fund-raising committee for Flyers, said each year the organization holds its cartwheel-a-thon, but this year, "I was just wondering if we could do it on a bigger scale."

She scanned the Internet, and sure enough, Guinness was willing to document the accomplishment.

Smith filled out some information and sent it in to Guinness to inquire about the feasibility about setting the world record, and since one hasn't been set in the past, Detroit Lakes is going to be the first.

With strict guidelines to follow, Smith said there needs to be two independent people to witness the event -- Mayor Larry Buboltz is one of them -- and then pictures and possibly video footage must be sent in to attest to the number of people turning cartwheels.

Also, each person who participates must sign his or her name, so a record number can be recorded.

If in the future another area or organization takes the largest standing from the Detroit Lakes' Minnesota Flyers, Smith said the event will likely be held again to challenge it and take back the honors.

In Saturday's event, regardless of age and ability, the only requirement is to do five cartwheels in one minute.

While there is no guarantee the cartwheel record will be published in Guinness' book because of the number of records, it will be published online at Guinness' Web site.

Smith said the group hopes to move the event along quickly as to not take up too much time, and concessions will be available for sale because it is over the supper hour.

"It's for the whole family," she encouraged.

People who participate don't need to be associated with the Flyers.

For a chance to be a part of the Guinness World Record for biggest cartwheel event, be at the Detroit Lakes High School football field Saturday, July 7, by 6 p.m. It is free to participate.
