Football: Indians start strong

The Mahnomen Indian football team entered the 2013 season opener with plenty of new players at new positions, but still came out with the same result they have the last several years – and that’s another dominating win.

The Indians kick started their defense of their 2012 Class 1A state championship with a more than convincing 54-0 win in Pillager Friday, as similar rushing stats were posted, as well.

Mahnomen pounded the Huskies on the ground, outgaining them by a hefty 360-43 margin, as running back Austin Reitan rushed for 134 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown, for a lofty 10.3 yards per carry average.

“I thought we played a very clean first game,” said Mahnomen head coach John Clark Jr. “We had a few fumbles and a few missed assignments, but we are very happy with our execution for the first game.”

While the Indians were marching up and down the field and scoring touchdowns – to the tune of a 27-0 halftime lead – Pillager didn’t pick up their first down until late in the second half.

They finished with just 58 total yards in the game, while picking up just two first downs to the Indians’ 18.

“Our defense was very stingy,” Clark said. “We also forced three turnovers, which set up a short field for scoring drives. I thought our veterans played very well and our younger kids stepped right in and showed a lot of promise.”

Senior quarterback Trevor Haugo capped five drives with touchdowns, including rushing scores of one, 12 and 10 yards and TD passes of 26 and 30 yards.

Each of Kole Lefebvre and Kody Levebvre had the touchdown catches.

Kal Handyside led the Indians’ defense with five tackles, followed by John Francis’ four.

Mahnomen (1-0) will travel to Red Lake County Friday, which was a 44-32 winner over Prairie Valley in the season opener.
