Football - Vikings lose in final minutes
Pelican Rapids fell to 1-2 on the season after suffering a difficult loss to the Hawley Nuggets on the road Friday night.
Entering the fourth quarter with a 14-0 lead in favor of the Vikings, the game unraveled for the visitors as they gave up 20 unanswered points.
The first two quarters found Pelican Rapids building a 14-0 halftime lead, starting with a three-yard touchdown run by Tanner Grahn in the first quarter.
The Pelican Rapids defense gave up some yards in the first half, but came up big with some fourth down stops to end a couple of drives, and a Devon Hensch fumble recovery to bring another to a stop.
The Vikings gained one more possession in the first half after Hawley mishandled a punt.
Pelican Rapids used two plays to score when Hensch found Nathan Sillerud open in the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown pass.
The third quarter found the Vikings' defense coming up with another big goal line stop when a hard tackle by Grahn forced a fumble, which was recovered by Ryan Bruggeman, as Pelican Rapids held onto the lead going into the fourth quarter.
Hawley took advantage of good field position to finally get on the board in the fourth quarter with a 36-yard pass and a 12-yard run.
The Vikings' defense responded well on the PAT attempts to stop them and maintain a two-point lead. The Hawley defense produced the game winning points, intercepting a third down pass attempt and returning it for a touchdown.
This time the two-point conversion was good and Hawley led 20-14.
Bruggeman gave the Vikings life with a big kick return to the Hawley 30-yard line.
After two successful running plays the night came to an end when a Vikings' fumble resulted in Hawley gaining possession and running out the clock.
"We had too many penalties and turnovers to be able to come away with the win," said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. "It becomes real easy to focus on the events which played out in the fourth quarter, but there were things throughout the game that put us against the wall and eventually that all caught up to us."
Grahn and Bruggeman led Pelican Rapids in tackles. Hensch had two fumble recoveries.
