Fosston picks up rare win over Mahnomen
There were three lead changes in the final 8:36 of regulation between the visiting Mahnomen Indians and Fosston Greyhounds last Friday, as the home team squeaked a 20-16 win on a Reed Sander four-yard run with 1:13 left on the clock.
The win put Fosston at 4-0, while the Indians dropped to 1-3 in the action-packed fourth quarter.
Fosston busted out on the scoreboard first, on an Andrew Juve 30-yard run in the second quarter.
After a scoreless first half for Mahnomen, quarterback Logan Handyside completed a scoring drive with a three-yard dive. The run, combined with a Handyside to Alex LaVoy two-point conversion pass, put Mahnomen up 8-7.
That set up a wild fourth quarter, in which the two teams exchanged scores, Fosston taking the lead on a 12-yard pass from Jake Juve at 8:36 and Mahnomen answering on a 44-yard fumble return for six points by LaVoy.
Fosston finished with 210 rushing yards, while holding the Indians to 128. Sander had 117 yards on the ground for Fosston, while Handyside led Mahnomen with 64.
Fosston's last previous win over Mahnomen came in 2002, when the Greyhounds took both the regular season game and playoff tilt.
The series dates back to 1937, as the Indians now hold a commanding 43-5 record against the Greyhounds.
Mahnomen will host Fertile-Beltrami Friday.
