Foul play suspected in Ponsford death
A man has been arrested and foul play is suspected in the death of a person Monday afternoon in Ponsford.
Charles James Jones, 48, who lives at 29486 County Road 129, Ponsford was arrested at a residence near his burning wood-frame house.
The fire at the Jones house was reported at 4:41 p.m. Monday. Firefighters from Carsonville and Wolf Lake were dispatched to the scene.
When Becker County deputies arrived they learned that Jones was at a house a short distance away, and that another person was missing and possibly still in the burning house.
They went over to talk to Jones and observed he had suffered minor burns and there were burn marks on his clothing.
At that time authorities arrested him. He is at the Becker County Jail.
Upon further investigation, a victim was located in the burned residence. Sheriff Kelly Shannon said authorities were unable to tell if the body was that of a man or a woman.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office is doing an autopsy to determine the identification of the person and the cause of death.
The investigation is being conducted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the White Earth Police Department and the Becker County Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary autopsy results are expected this afternoon, Shannon said.
Jones has several prior convictions on his record, including fifth-degree domestic assault, fourth-degree intentional damage to property, and fifth-degree controlled substance crime.
