Former Detroit Lakes resident Frances L. Mikulecky, 93, of North Olmsted, Ohio, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at her residence.
Frances Lucille Shaffer was born to Joseph and Olena (Larson) Shaffer on Sept. 28, 1915 in Inverness, Mont. At the age of nine she moved with her family to rural Detroit Lakes. She attended District 70 Country School in rural Detroit Lakes, and then attended Detroit Lakes High School, where she graduated in 1932. She then attended the Detroit Lakes Teacher Training Department, graduating in 1933.
Frances taught at rural schools for four years in the Callaway and Hitterdal areas. On June 23, 1937 she married Stanley Mikulecky. They lived in California for eight years, returning to Detroit Lakes in 1947. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and other religion classes for 28 years. She was also an active member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, as well as a leader in Cub Scouts and Campfire Girls.
Frances's hobbies included gardening, reading, letter writing, crossword puzzles, and quilting. This amazing lady was an inspiration to all those who came in contact with her.
Surviving Frances are her son, David (Marilys) Mikulecky of Great Falls, Mont.; two daughters, Mary Lou (Thomas) Kusserow of Tempe, Ariz., and Carol (Charles) Lego of North Olmsted, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Stanley (1988); four brothers, baby boy Shaffer, Joseph Shaffer, Curtis Shaffer, and Harris Shaffer; and one sister, Elva Shaffer Bengtson.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Dan Abrahams officiating. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services.
Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughter Andrea Mikulecky, grandsons Stephen Mikulecky, Justin Kusserow and Benjamin Kusserow; daughter-in-law Marilys Mikulecky; and sons-in-law Thomas Kusserow and Charles Lego.
