Frazee and DL send wrestlers to state meet; two Lakers make state swim and diving meet
The Class 1A state wrestling tournament will have a heavy tint of green to it after seven Frazee wrestlers qualified individually, to go along with the Hornet's team state berth, which was earned two weeks ago.
A pair of Detroit Lakes wrestlers also qualified for the Class 2A tournament in senior 189-pounder Brandon Johnson and 160-pound junior Alex Feldt, who each will be making their first trips to the state meet.
The Laker state contingent wasn't done, though, as freshman Quillan Oak and sophomore Jon Melgaard punched their tickets to the Class 1A state boys' swimming and diving meet.
The seven Frazee wrestlers who grappled their way out of the Section 8-1A meet included sophomore Trevor Stilke (103 pounds), sophomore Wade Hukriede (125), freshman Rij Koehnen (130), senior Mike Lucero (140), senior Tyler Blauert (160), senior Cody Nunn (171) and sophomore Kody Lafraniere-Sorenson (189).
The MSHSL state wrestling meet will be held Wednesday-Saturday, March 4-7, inside the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The Class 1A individual preliminaries will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, while the Class 2A prelims start at 8 p.m.
The Hornets will face No. 2 seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the first round of the team tournament. The Class 1A team finals will be Saturday, starting at 6:30 p.m.
