Frazee decides to interview for interim superintendent
The Frazee-Vergas School District will have an interim superintendent for the 2011-12 school year.
At the Tuesday regular board meeting, the school board decided to go with an interim superintendent for a year rather than combining the superintendent and principal position.
"It's something we need to get moving on," said Principal Rob Nudell, who is also acting as emergency interim superintendent until the interim comes on board. "I think it's in the best interest of everyone to hire an interim."
The board is setting up interview times for July 19 for five of the interim applicants. They include Charles Briscoe, Russ Johnson, Nordy Nelson, Joe Merseth and Charles Cheney.
The board had narrowed the list to seven candidates last week, but after Board Chair Rich Ziegler called them to see if they would be interested in working part-time and for one year only, two of the candidates were "lukewarm to not interested," he said.
The board discussed how many days the interim would be needed, and while no set number of hours was decided on, they agreed that it would be more full-time than not.
They discussed having a flexible schedule, because the interim superintendent's workload would be heavier in the first part of the year and maybe part time in the second half of the year.
Or, depending on the candidate, they may be able to work fewer than five days a week and still get the job done.
Board members will be e-mailing questions to Nudell to compile a list of interview questions for the candidates. The public is also welcome to e-mail questions for consideration. His e-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Questions are due to Nudell by 5 p.m. Thursday.
The same questions will be asked of all the candidates.
The interview process will involve a meeting of the board as a whole, so it is open to the public.
After board members interview candidates on July 19, they will discuss who their top pick is and have Nudell negotiate a contract with the interim superintendent.
The board will meet again July 29 at 7 a.m. to name the interim.
Also at the board meeting, Kari Dahlgren, who serves as the treasurer of the Fastbreak Basketball Club, asked the board to consider funding coaching fees for seventh and eighth grade boys' and girls' basketball coaches.
She said it is getting more and more difficult for the club to support the $6,700 fee.
"That's a lot of pizza and turkey sandwiches to sell," she said.
The club already hosts a number of fund-raisers, and will continue to do so, but they are just breaking even on costs.
"We are just barely surviving," she said. "Anything we've saved is gone."
She understands that other athletic clubs could be asking for money if the board supports her request, but said it is "physically impossible" for the group to raise any more money to support the coaches.
They have about 100 boys and girls involved in basketball in grades seven through 12, she said.
"As a parent, I would rather see our activity fee go up to $100 than sell another turkey sandwich," she said.
The board didn't act on the request at Tuesday's meeting. It will likely be on an upcoming agenda.
The board also accepted the lowest bid for the elementary boiler, which came in at $85,500. The lowest of six bids, the bid is about $20,000 less than what the district had budgeted for the project.
The board received notice that the district received a $9,800 grant from the Twins for baseball field improvements.
