Frazee football gains No. 3 seed in Section 8-2A after finishing 6-2
It was the capper Frazee was hoping for to a strong regular season, as the Hornets downed Blackduck 53-32 to finish the regular season 6-2, on a five-game winning streak.
The victory ensured Frazee the No. 3 seed in the Class 2A playoffs, where the Hornets will host No. 6 Pelican Rapids Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.
Mike Moltzan ripped the Drakes' defense for 164 yards on 19 carries, while backfield mate Matt Viste wrapped up the Northern Valley Plains Conference rushing title with his 150 yards on 14 carries.
Even with limited action from the starting offense, the team racked up 473 yards on the ground, setting a new single-game rushing record.
The previous record was set last season, when the Hornets tallied 414 rushing yards versus Pine River-Backus.
Viste bulled his way into the end zone three times, while Ben Lujan had two. Other rushers who passed the pylons were Moltzan, Storm Green and Chris Burt.
Viste finished as the conference's leading rusher with 1,079 yards, while Moltzan finished with 800-plus yards for third place.
"It is absolutely outstanding to have two backs in the top three and these young men are top notch kids," said Frazee head coach Jim Rader. "You will not hear them boasting about their accomplishments, rather they focus their attention on team success.
"The offensive line takes pride in their job, and they lay it all on the line for the guys carrying the ball."
Frazee's defense also created four turnovers, including interceptions by Rick Brandt, Clint Johnson and Tyler Sherman.
