FRAZEE FOOTBALL Hornets almost has huge upset
The Frazee football team came up short in a thriller of a game versus visiting Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Friday, losing 27-23 after a 15-point Hornet's fourth quarter.
WAO (4-2) came into the night having been state ranked in the top 10 a couple different times this season, and boasting a Division I football recruit who plays tailback and linebacker.
Yet, the Hornets team concept of play allowed them to lock horns and nearly pull off an amazing come from behind victory.
The game started with the Ponies in command, as they notched two scores, before the Hornets could answer with one of their own.
Shortly before the half-time, WAO added another score to go into the break with a 19-8 lead.
"Given the speed and size of the WAO backs, many teams would have cashed in at that time and experienced a very unpleasant second half, but Frazee is a team with heart and determination and refused to back down," said Frazee head coach Jim Rader. "Instead, with some half-time adjustments and renewed desire, the Hornets battled back holding WAO in check for the entire second half and adding two more scores of our own to take the lead with seconds remaining on the clock."
Unfortunately, for the Hornets, WAO pulled off a last second 60-yard TD pass to retake the lead with only the kickoff to remain.
"These young men played their hearts out," Rader said. "I am extremely proud of them. They are gaining trust in their teammates and confidence in their abilities.
"Every member of this team is important and contributes to our successes, and every member felt the pain of the loss. When they lay it on the line for one another, they are all winners... even when the scoreboard may show otherwise."
Frazee running back Cody Piper found lots of running room, rushing for a season-high 204 yards on two touchdowns on a workman-like 36 carries.
The Hornets (2-4) will travel to Fosston (0-6) Friday for a 7 p.m. start.
