The Frazee Lady Hornets had cruised in their first three games of the season with relative ease, which resulted in a 3-0 start with the average margin of victory at 26 points.

But Friday night in Pelican Rapids, the task was much tougher against the highly-touted Vikings.

Frazee was unable to overcome a subpar shooting effort and lost their conference opener by a score of 63-57.

"It was good effort by the girls but we just couldn't get a big shot to drop at the right time," Frazee head coach Dave Conzemius said. "We definitely had our chances in the second half and just couldn't get over the hump."

Pelican Rapids (3-0 overall, 1-0 HOL) took advantage of the slow start by Frazee (3-1, 0-1 HOL) and took a 24-10 lead with six minutes to go in the first half.

The Lady Hornets responded with a 15-2 run to cut the lead to one point. The Vikings responded by scoring the last seven points of the half to take a 33-25 lead to the locker room.

Pelican Rapids again pushed the lead in the second half and led by as many as 12 points.

Frazee fought back again and got within two points at 53-51, with about five minutes remaining.

The Lady Hornets had two possessions to tie or take the lead but could not convert.

From there, the two teams exchanged baskets until the Vikings converted free throws in the last 30 seconds to put the game away.

"This was a good game for our team as we found out that we can play with a good team on the road," Conzemius said. "We handled their pressure defense very well and had a lot of good looks at the basket that we usually convert. We will learn from this loss."

Alexis Tappe led the Lady Hornets with a game high 24 points and she also had team highs with 12 rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Katie McCorquodale and Josi Tappe added 10 points each and Taylor Tappe had nine points.

The Vikings were led by the Korf sisters, as freshmen McKenzie had 21 points and senior Madison had 13 points.

As a team, Frazee shot 33.4 percent (23-for-68), while the Vikings shot 47.2 percent (25-for-53).

Frazee is back in action Thursday when the Lady Hornets host HOL foe Breckenridge.
