Frazee girls use 'D' to topple PC
The Frazee Lady Hornets continued their improved play Thursday night at Frazee, as they cruised by Park Christian 46-26.
"We have steadily gotten better as the season has progressed," head coach Dave Conzemius said. "We are doing the little things much better, which is adding up to more wins for us. But we still have not put a complete game together."
The Lady Hornets (6-13 overall) and the Falcons (2-13 overall) battled though a close first half as Frazee struggled to keep the Falcons, who boast three starters over six feet tall, off of the offensive glass.
Freshman Alexis Tappe helped the Lady Hornets to a four-point halftime lead at 22-18 by scoring 14 of her game-high 19 points.
The second half saw Frazee rebound the ball much better, and the Lady Hornets also limited quality shots at the basket for Park Christian.
Frazee opened the second half on a 15-0 run, thanks in large part to freshmen Ashley Bachmann, who scored 10 points in the streak.
The Falcons would never get closer than 16 points the rest of the way, as the stingy Lady Hornet defense held Park Christian to eight-second half points.
"As has been our trend lately, we played much better basketball in the second half," Conzemius said. "We did a much better job on the glass and we also moved the ball better, committing only two turnovers in the second half."
Tappe had a game-high 19 points to lead Frazee, and also had a team-high seven rebounds. Bachmann added 17 points, five rebounds and three steals. Sophomore McKinzie Tangen had six rebounds and junior Kristi Smith had five rebounds and a team-high three assists.
For the game, the Lady Hornets shot 37.8 percent (17-for-45) and the Falcons shot 29.8 percent (11-for-37).
Both teams had 28 rebounds.
"I thought this was a good win for us as we continue to move in the right direction," Conzemius added. "We are playing our best basketball of the year and this is the right time to be doing that."
The Lady Hornets' game with Lake Park-Audubon, scheduled for Friday, was postponed, with a makeup date yet to be determined.
Frazee will play at Wadena on Tuesday.
