Frazee gymnastics find improvement

Three Frazee gymnasts took part in the Jackie Mann Invitational at Perham Saturday and made some much-needed improvements.

The Hornets made leaps and bounds of improvement on vault from where they were last year, as the trio of Alane Sauer, Emma Buhr and Tiffany Haugen each marked scores of 7.8 or better.

"Last season only two of the gymnasts were twisting on vault," said Frazee head coach Amie Erickson. "This season we already have five who twist, so I am looking for our vault scores to be higher."

Leading the way was Buhr with an 8.1 with a half-on handspring, beating her personal-best score of 7.75.

Haugen landed an 8.0 with a handspring half-off, who also beat her personal best of 7.75.

Sauer also performed a half-off vault for a 7.8, while taking a 6.75 on floor, with a goal of sequential flysprings, which she is close to obtaining.

Haugen finished with a 6.5 on floor and Buhr had a 4.7.

"Tiffany has fantastic height on her back tucks in her tumbling passes," Erickson said. "Her tumble dance tumble series needs polishing. Emma had difficulty getting enough height and endurance for tumbling passes. She has a new floor routine with a nice choreography this year."

The Hornets took a step of progression on beam, with Buhr sticking her routine and finishing with a 6.9. Sauer fell once and took a 6.0.

"We lack difficulty on beam tumbling which limits our scores," Erickson added about beam.

The bars are still a struggle, as Sauer finished with a 6.0, while Haugen had a 2.7 and Buhr a 2.2.

"Bars is still our weakest event," Erickson said. "With lack of a channel bar (in practice), it's tough to train handstands and giants. Each of the gymnasts really needs to work on form on bars."

Jessica Irish is out for awhile after tearing three ligaments in her ankle, while Quincy Mickelson couldn't make the meet in Perham due to being ill.

The Hornets will be in Perham Dec. 18, for a triangular against the Yellowjackets and Alexandria.
