Frazee Hornets advance to state semifinal

ST. PAUL -- It's not too often Casey Nunn -- Frazee's 145-pounder -- gets a chance to finish off a dual.

The junior did it on Thursday, in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A dual tournament at Xcel Energy Center.

The Hornets clinched the win with six matches to go, taking a 41-0 lead over Mille Lacs through the first eight classes behind four pins.

Frazee wound up with a 62-12 win to move into Friday's semifinals.

"I don't think it's ever come down to me before," Nunn said with a laugh. "I wasn't even thinking about it. I was just wrestling."

Nunn's pin at 145 was part of the Hornets' theme all day. Frazee made quick work of Mille Lacs, churning out six pins in its 12 wins.

"They're just a huge momentum boost and confidence builder for everybody," Frazee coach John Barlund said.

"It was a theme today, but it's been a theme all year for us."

Frazee got pins from Jordan Ketter at 112 and Bruce Lemon at 125 to stake a 22-0 lead through just four matches.

The Hornets also had a five-match stretch in the middle weights, where they tallied 29 points behind four pins and a technical fall.

"We're deep and it makes it fun knowing that we've got a chance no matter who we put out there," Nunn said. "We were getting pins from alternates and backups."

But Frazee's backups aren't like usual backups. Wade Huckriede might be the Hornets' No. 2 option at 130 -- behind Myrel Schermerhorn -- but Huckriede was a state qualifier last year.

And Huckriede wrestled up two classes at 140 on Thursday, but pinned his opponent in 2:44.

"Not a lot of teams can say they have that," Barlund said. "Our depth is what's made this team so competitive, I think.

"...Now we're excited for the next one. We're in the position to put ourselves in a state championship match."

Frazee faced Zumbrota-Mazeppa Friday for a spot in Saturday's championship.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa outlasted Paynesville Area 30-27, thanks to a 5-3 win by heavyweight Jordan Arndt in triple overtime.
