Frazee man gets prison for multiple bad checks
A Frazee man was sentenced July 3 in Becker County District Court on a felony theft by check charge.
Gary Wayne Merrill, 32, of 30397 U.S. Highway 10, Lot 2, Frazee, was ordered to serve 18 months in prison and fined $210. He must also pay almost $16,000 in restitution for damages.
Merrill was accused of writing several thousand dollars in bad checks at various Becker County businesses between Feb. 6 and March 28 of this year.
According to the criminal complaint, filed on Friday, Merrill opened a new checking account at a Detroit Lakes bank on Feb. 6, making an initial deposit of $50, but made no further deposits into the account. He then proceeded to write more than 50 checks on the account, and continued to do so even after the account had been closed.
All of the checks were subsequently returned for non-sufficient funds.
