Frazee matmen start strong in win over Lakers
DETROIT LAKES - An early lead compounded into a 46-16 victory for No. 7 Class 1A-ranked Frazee over Detroit Lakes inside Ralph Anderson Gym on Thursday.
But it wasn't easy for the Hornets lighter weights to build a 9-0 advantage after the first three bouts, with all coming on close decisions. It was enough of a cushion for the middle of Frazee's lineup to run off with the duel.
"We made a lot of mistakes, a lot of little things went wrong," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "We didn't have good motion on the bottom and did a lot of little things wrong which I saw.
"The score doesn't really matter, but instead, I'm more concerned of how we wrestled."
The pivotal win for Frazee came at 119-pounds, where eighth grader Myrel Schermerhorn posted the upset over DL senior Brandon Baker with an 11-5 decision to put the Hornets up 9-0.
"We knew they were tough at 119 and it was a huge win for Myrel," said Frazee head coach John Barlund. "Myrel had two big moves to push the decision in his favor."
Schermerhorn was able to stalk out to a 5-0 lead after posting a takedown and three back points, before Baker fought back to his feet.
The DL senior was able to close the gap to 6-5, but a reversal by Schermerhorn late in the third period shifted the momentum back his way. Another near fall pushed the margin to 11-5.
"He got two big moves on Brandon, hopefully it's a good loss for (Baker) and he'll learn from it," Ullyott said.
No. 9-ranked sophomore Tanner Ellenberg of Frazee preceded Schermerhorn's victory at 112 with a narrow win over sophomore Mike Bellefeuille 4-1.
The match remained tied at zero throughout a scoreless first period before Ellenberg recorded a takedown in the second and scoring a match-sealing near fall in the third period.
"That was a good match," Barlund said. "Tanner is considered a smaller (112 pounder), but he's having a good season."
It all started with Frazee sophomore Trevor Stilke's 5-1 decision over Gabe Foltz at 103.
Then the Lakers fell into a deeper hole with open weights at 125 and 130, but junior Garrett Foltz stopped the bleeding with a nice 4-0 decision over eighth grader Tyler Ziegler to make the score 21-3.
But No. 3-ranked senior Mike Lucero picked up back-breaking bonus points at 140 with a pin on Justin Tweeton for the 27-3 advantage.
Although DL senior Josh Tweeton answered Lucero's fall with a pin of his own on sophomore Casey Nunn at 145 and Laker junior Nate Duchene posted a major decision at 152, it was too little, too late as Frazee collected a pin from No. 8-ranked Cody Nunn and a major decision from No. 10 Kody Lafraniere/Sorenson at 189.
DL junior Justin Holm finished the dual by collecting a 5-0 decision over Jamie Holmer at heavyweight to bring the final score to 46-16.
"Well, we have two more weeks to make a difference (for the individual section tournament)," Ullyott said. "We just have to start doing the little things better now."
For Frazee, they are 13-2 and are also preparing for a run through section team and individual tournaments.
The Hornets have losses against Class 2A No. 2-ranked Perham and section rival Badger/Greenbush-Middle River. The first round will be in Frazee Tuesday.
"We lost to some good teams and losing never hurts at the end of the (regular) season," Barlund said. "We'll have to get past a very good D-G-F team (in the sections), so we are not overlooking them.
"If we face Greenbush, that will be a tight duel."
The Lakers have the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Section 6-2A team tournament, which will be held Tuesday in Park Rapids.
They face No. 5 Park Rapids and the winner will be pitted against No. 1 Perham that same night.
The Hornets gained the No. 1 seed in the south bracket of the Section 8-1A tournament. They will face the winner of No. 4 Lake Park-Audubon and No. 5 Hawley.
The semifinals and finals are Saturday, Feb. 21, in Fertile. Crookston is the No. 1 seed and BGMR the No. 2 in the north bracket.
