Frazee School brings back musical
Recognize any of these quotes?
“I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant’s faithful one-hundred percent!”
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
“ASAP. Whatever that means. It must mean, ‘Act swiftly awesome pachyderm!”
More than likely you do.
Those quotes are from books and films based on Dr. Seuss, and the Frazee-Vergas High School students will be bringing them to the stage in about six weeks in “Seussical,” the musical based on the books of Dr. Seuss.
Monday evening at the Frazee-Vergas School District board meeting, Activities Director Nick Courneya suggested the board start budgeting next year to bring back the district’s school play. When budgets were cut over the years, the arts program was one to go.
Some high school seniors had a different idea in mind though, asking choir teacher Brittany Forness to bring the musical back this year so they could perform.
She said Monday that they were really the driving force behind bringing back the theater program.
When the school board started to discuss the idea of bringing back the play next year, everyone was in favor. When Forness said this year is still doable, though some board members hesitated that it could be pulled off in just six weeks, they supported the decision to go ahead for this year.
“Less time, more practices,” Forness said. “We’re missing an open window with the seniors available with their passion,” she added, urging the board to approve the decision for this year.
She said she already had the musical and dates of the show in mind if the board approved it.
“I think we could pull it off,” she said.
The musical is estimated to cost between $8,000 and $9,000, and Superintendent Terry Karger said he will work with business manager Pam Pontius to find the money in this year’s budget.
Next year, the district will budget for another play or musical.
“Once we start, we’re going to keep going,” Forness said.
The board agreed to let Forness go ahead with the musical this year. It will be held mid-May.
And with the board’s approval, oh, the places those actors will go.
“So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you’ll move mountains.” ― Dr. Seuss
