ST. PAUL - The Frazee wrestling squad had a nice recovery after a bit of struggle in the early stages of the Class 1A state meet by winning the consolation championship in team competition.

The Hornets fell in the quarterfinals to eventual state runner-up and No. 2 seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo 35-22, but rebounded with a convincing 49-15 win over Royalton/Upsala in the consolation semifinals Friday.

From there, the unseeded Hornets sealed up the consolation top prize with a 42-25 win over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.

No. 1 seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won the team championship after defeating Kenyon-Wanamingo 32-25.

All four top seeds advanced out of the quarterfinals, while No. 4 Medford toppled No. 3 ACGC for the bronze.

Hornets start fast in

consolation semi win

The Frazee Hornet wrestling team rebounded Friday with a convincing 49-15 win over Royalton/Upsala in the Class 1A team consolation semifinals inside the Xcel Energy Center.

The Hornets started quickly and didn't let up by winning the first five matches to take a 19-0 lead, including a pin registered by Wade Huckriede at the 125-pound slot.

Frazee collected three straight decisions to kick of the dual, starting with an action-packed 103-pound bout and ending with Hornet Jordan Ketter topping Dan Borash 9-8.

Tanner Ellenberg and Myrle Schermerhorn won at 112 and 119, respectively, which preceded Huckriede's pin.

Royalton/Upsala took weights 135 through 145 to pull to within 23-12, but Brandon VanWaterMulen's fall on Kyle Wentland stopped the bleeding for Frazee.

From there, Tyler Blauert added a pin on Ethan Sczublewski for a commanding 35-15 lead.

Frazee capped the bout with three straight falls by Cody Nunn, Kody Lafraniere-Sorenson and Ben Lujan.

Frazee struggles out of the gates

Not everything went as planned for the area wrestlers during the MSHSL state wrestling meet over the course of the first two days of action inside the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Out of the seven state qualifiers from Frazee, only Hornet senior 171-pounder Nunn made it out of the quarterfinals.

The senior Hornet held on to win a close quarterfinal match by the score of 3-2 against Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Matt Moenkedick.

Nunn -- who was ranked No. 6 in the state at 171 and Moenkedick No. 3 -- was able to register the match's only takedown with 53 seconds remaining in the third period.

From there, Nunn was able to ride Moenkedick out, although the Frazee grappler was aggressive in doing so.

"I knew if I kept pushing and pushing and pushing, I would get a takedown sooner or later," said Nunn, who broke the 1-1 tie after two periods. "After getting that takedown, I was pushing the action to possibly gain a stalling on him, since he already had one warning. I just had to be safe about it."

Nunn opened the tournament with a 6-3 win over LeSuer-Henderson's Josh Willaert.

"There was just a lot of rolling around in that one," Nunn said of his preliminary win. "I had some key takedowns early and was able to ride him out in the last period."

Nunn fell to No. 2 ranked Ben McPhail of Pine Island in the semi's on a narrow 3-2 decision, then lost to ACGC's Micah Larson in the wrestleback.

The Frazee 171-pounder finished with a fifth-place finish, though, after defeating Pelican Rapids' Tyler Wilson 10-3.

The only other Hornet to survive the preliminary round was 140-pound Lucero, who defeated Myles Moreno of Hayfield 3-2.

The No. 2 ranked Lucero was matched up with No. 9 ranked Jason Arvidson of Parkers Prairie in the quarters, which turned out to be just as tight a bout.

The two wrestled to a 2-2 tie heading into the third period, where Arvidson recorded an escape after starting in the down position.

Arvidson did an effective riding job on Lucero the final 40 seconds to post the upset and send the Hornet to the wrestlebacks.

Blauert made the long trek through the wrestlebacks after his preliminary loss, by going 3-2 to finish in fifth, after he posted a 4-3 decision on Medford's Jake Elzen in the medal round.

Other Frazee wrestlers losing in the preliminaries included Trevor Stilke (103), Hukriede (125), Rij Koehnen (130), Blauert (160) and Lafaniere-Sorenson (189).

The Hornets couldn't overcome an early 25-0 deficit, as Kenyon-Wanamingo was too strong at the start, winning the first six matches -- with three of them producing two pins and a major decision.

Frazee went on to win four consecutive matches to pull to 25-19, including technical falls by Blauert and Nunn, but it was too little, too late for the Hornets.

Mahnomen/Waubun junior William Hunt finished fourth in the 160-pound Class 1A division after going 4-2.
