Good numbers out for the Frazee boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will provide solid depth in each event for the 2013 season.

For the Frazee girls’ team, the Hornets will field a deep team, which should provide up to two to three athletes per event.

“The numbers are very good freshmen through senior classes and we’ll have some good competition in practice,” said Frazee girls’ head coach Jim Jacobson. “The girls will be pushing each other every day.”

Making her return is junior Ellie Bachmann, who is a two-year state participant in the 800-meter run.

Bachmann will have a very good chance of returning to state after just missing it last year, Jacobson said.

“She is off to a good start this season, she’s looking strong in the 800, again,” he added.

Seniors Sam Barker and Jessica Reishus will be anchors in their respective events.

Barker will take on long jump and sprinting duties, while Reishus will be the leader in the distance races, as well as the triple jump.

Senior Samantha Byer will be the team’s leading pole vaulter heading into the season, as well.

The Hornet boys’ team has good experience returning and will be filling every event.

Senior Cody Nordquist will be a returning section hurdler, while senior Tyler Ziegler will begin the season as one of the Hornets’ top sprinters, after qualifying for sections last year.

Senior Bruce Lemon returns as a section 800-runner, while foreign exchange student junior Gabriele Grassi looks to be a top hurdler and sprinter for the Hornets this season.

“We also have a bunch of freshmen who will be contributing,” said Frazee head boys’ coach Brian Tangen. “We have many unproven distance runners, who are fighting for spots.”

Tangen added the sprint relays should be a point-scorer for the team.

Nordquist will also be one of the team’s pole vaulters, while Roger and Martin Thorp will be taking on both discus and shot put.

“The numbers out are better than average, with a nice mix of experience and youth,” Tangen said.

The Hornets will now wait for the weather to change to spring. The April 18, meet in Pelican Rapids is in danger of being postponed or cancelled, while April 23 in Park Rapids could be the season outdoor opener.
