Frazee-Vergas School changes elementary principal position, opens up for applications
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

With the restructuring of the Frazee-Vergas School District administration, the school board Monday night voted to eliminate the elementary and secondary dean of students positions. It then created the position of elementary principal.

The position changes have been talked about for about a year.

Dave Trautman holds the secondary dean of students position along with his activities director position. Trautman announced his retirement last month.

Troy Haugen holds the elementary dean of student position, therefore his job has been eliminated as of June 30. He has been encouraged to apply for the elementary principal position though.

“He has positioned himself with the credentials for this position,” Superintendent Chuck Cheney said.

So next school year there will be a k-6 principal position, and Rob Nudell will be the 7-12 principal and be able to take over some of the dean of students duties that he was unable to do previously since he was the k-12 principal.

With the dean of students duties no longer tied to the activities director position, the district has decided to hire an activities director/student support specialist for next school year.

Though those extra duties aren’t 100 percent defined yet, Cheney said he’s gotten pages worth of suggestions for what those duties could be.

He said that many times people think of extra tasks as discipline, truancy or so forth, but, “we’re looking for someone to be proactive and get our students involved.”

Both of the positions are open for applications the next three weeks. Interviews will then take place and an elementary principal and activities director/student support specialist will be hired in April for the 2013-14 school year.

One more major change under the staffing category is that of superintendent.

Last week the board offered former principal Terry Karger the position, which he accepted, and this week the board voted on the three-year contract.

His rate of pay will be $105,000 for the 2013-14 year, $107,000 for the 2014-15 year and $109,000 for the 2015-16 year.

The contract includes 20 vacation days, 10 paid holidays, 12 sick days, health insurance, $50 a month for a cell phone and $1,000 in relocation expenses.
