The Yellowjackets were able to nip Frazee by 2.5 points 207-204.5, while Detroit Lakes finished fifth with 100 points. Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus was the highest Mid-State team in third with 177 points.

The new format enabled to fill more weights and make the conference tournaments that much more competitive in the two-day affair.

The Lakers had just one wrestler in the finals with No. 4 ranked junior Parker Jackson falling in the 152-pound division, where he lost to PLPRB’s Nick Gravdahl 19-12.

No. 4 ranked heavyweight James Huwe finished fourth overall, after losing to Cole Grinsteinner in the bronze match 1-0.

Senior Kirby Siewert wrestled to the 220-pound finals, before falling to Pelican Rapids’ Eddie Ramos 7-5.  “We are certainly a better team than we showed at the conference tournament,” said DL head coach Rob Ullyott.  “We will need to wrestle much better as we move into the end or our regular season schedule and post season.”

The United Clay Becker Badgers crowned a pair of conference champions, with senior Mason Swegarden claiming the 145-pound division, while Jonah Lange won the 170 bracket.

Swegarden, who is ranked No. 6 at 145, took the 4-0 decision over Perham’s Colin Nietzke in the finals.

“For Mason, his game is on his feet and he wrestled well on his feet in the tournament,” said UCB head coach Nick Paur. “He was very good on his takedowns, as well.”

UCB sophomore Lange defeated Perham’s Cole Schmitz in the finals by fall at the 4:45 mark.

“Jonah is a very technical wrestler and his win over (Schmitz) was a huge one for section seeding,” Paur said. “It was a huge win for Jonah. He has been mentally prepared all season long.”

UCB finished with 70 points for a respectable seventh place.

The Hornets four conference championships in Tanner Reetz (113), Austin Skillings (132), Kody Van-Deneykel (182) and Garrett Malstrom (heavyweight).

Frazee had one runner-up, Grant Jepson, who lost to Sam Pirotta in the 126 division in the finals.
