Frazee wrestling and three DL gymnasts earn state berths
With playoff action hot and heavy for area prep sports, several state berths were earned by Frazee and Detroit Lakes athletes.
A trio of Laker gymnasts qualified for the Class 1A state meet after the Section 8-1A competition was held Saturday in Park Rapids.
The young contingent of Laker gymnasts had an outstanding meet, posting a season team-high score of 144.425, which was second best to the No. 1 ranked team of Perham, which finished with a 148.5.
Freshman Jessica Stelter and sophomore Amy Crawford each netted top four all-around scores to qualify them for the state meet.
Stelter finished with a 36.525 for third overall and Crawford marked a 36.050 for fourth (the top four finishers in each event go to state).
Junior Kristi Hoppert also will make the trip to the state meet after she finished third on bars with a 9.3.
Hoppert finished fourth in the state meet last year on bars with a 9.15, while each of Stelter and Crawford will be making their first appearance in state.
The Class 1A individual state meet will be held Friday, starting at 11 a.m. and running through to 2 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.
Perham will be going for its sixth-consecutive state title Thursday, beginning at 11 a.m.
The Frazee Hornet wrestling team qualified for its 17th state appearance, after toppling Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Saturday for the Section 8-1A championship by the score of 41-24.
The Hornets beat Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 44-19 in the semifinals, before downing the Gators to avenge an earlier loss to them during the regular season.
Frazee finished third in last year's 2008 state meet, losing to eventual state champion Jackson County Central in the semifinals 34-28 and defeating New York Mills in the bronze bout 39-18.
Frazee, which is unseeded for the state tournament, will face No. 2 seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo Thursday, March 5, at 9:30 a.m. inside the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Other Class 1A state match-ups include: No. 3 ACGG vs. Royalton; No. 1 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg vs. Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial and No. 4 Medford vs. Border West.
The Section 8-1A individual tournament will be Friday and Saturday in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton.
Next up is the section boys' swimming and diving meet for the Lakers, which will take place in Bemidji Friday and Saturday.
DL has three competitors ranked in the state. Quillan Oak is ranked No. 2 in the 100 breaststroke, diver Jon Melgaard is No. 3 and Brandon Olson holds a top 20 ranking in the 500 freestyle.
The Laker wrestlers will be in action for the section individual tournament, which is Friday and Saturday in Cass Lake/Bena.
