Frazee's Hanson and Ziegler compete in Class 1A golf meet

BECKER - Every component of Frazee senior Beau Hanson's golf game was working correctly, but one -- his short putting.

It took only that one malfunction to slide the 2010 Class 1A state champion six strokes behind the leader, with a five-over par 77 at the Class 1A state boys' golf meet at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker Tuesday.

Hanson shot a 39-38-77 in the first day of the Class 1A state meet, not a score he was hoping to finish with.

"I was hitting the ball well, but I just struggled with my putting," Hanson said. "I especially struggled with my short putts."

Hanson pushed a couple of shorter birdie putts on the front nine, which accumulated with two missed putts on hole eight to send him to one-over par at the turn.

His driving and chipping were getting him to the green, though.

Martin County West sophomore Cordell Weber leads after the first day with a one-under par 71, while two through six are within four strokes of each other.

"My goal is to get a few holes under par and just play my own game," Hanson said.

Hanson is coming off a Section 6-1A championship where he made 18 straight pars, a feat he has never accomplished.

"I couldn't make any of my birdie putts, but I could make every one of my par putts," the Frazee senior said of his section meet.

Senior teammate Zack Ziegler is tied for 58th after shooting a 48-41-89. He started off his round well, then hit some trouble right before his front nine ended.

"I ended up hooking a lot of shots on the back nine and ended with a couple of double bogeys," Ziegler said. "(Wednesday) I am going to keep my iron play strong and hit the greens, then focus on making pars."

United South Central leads Legacy Christian Academy by two strokes 327 to 329 in team competition, while Mahnomen is in eighth with a 351.

Mahnomen eighth grader Blake Kalbaugh leads the Indians with an 80.

Mahnomen's Ashley Schoenborn carded a 99, while teammate Kristi Steinmetz shot a 103, while Lake Park-Audubon's Laynee Cole finished with a 107.

The Class 1A boys tee off starting at 11:40 a.m. and the girls at 7:30 a.m. at Pebble Creek Golf Course.
