Free concert series starts Sunday in New York MIls
Thanks to grants made to the City of New York Mills by the Lake Region Arts Council and to the Center by the Minnesota State Arts Board, everyone can enjoy great music in a series of four free concerts to be held during the month of August.
Three of the concerts are being presented under the auspices of a grant from Lake Region Arts Council to the City of New York Mills. These "from the deck" concerts will each be presented in the new performance space being developed in back of the NYM Cultural Center.
Each Sunday afternoon concert will begin at 5 p.m.
Leo and Kathy Lara will kick off the series this Sunday, Aug. 5 with an energetic performance of beautiful songs from the Andes. Leo plays the charango and many other stringed, flute, and percussion instruments.
One of the most entertaining parts of the Lara performance is that Leo and Kathy include the audience in their music. Anyone can play one of the multitude of rattles and shakers that make this music come to life.
The second concert on Aug. 12 will be a performance by Brothers Burn Mountain, a duo of electric guitar and drums playing blues-infused music.
The Brothers have previously played in the area at Barter Fest and at the Harvest Thyme Bistro.
Then, on Friday, Aug. 17, as a part of the Continental Divide Music Festival, Curtis & Loretta will perform during the Puppet Pageant at 7 p.m., and the Cactus Blossoms, a 5-piece country band, will play at the City Hall Ballroom at 7:45 p.m.
The final free August concert will be Sunday, Aug. 26, "off the deck" of the Cultural Center at 5 p.m. This concert will feature jazz riffs and music of the islands by local band "Motu."
Bring a lawn chair for the Sunday afternoon concerts, and for the Puppet Pageant too. There will be summer food fare available at each of the Sunday afternoon concerts too.
