Garden Quilt Show awards prizes, builds scholarship
The Garden Quilt Show, held in Lake Park on Aug. 23, is the fund-raiser for the Families Forever Scholarship fund in memory of Mary Disse Ballard.
Two $500 scholarships are presented to young women who express in an essay and interview what their families, communities and churches have done to help them be ready to go out in the world and succeed. One of the young women is from the Miss Northwest scholarship contest.
This year's winner was Breanna Sinner of Detroit Lakes. The other is from the Lake Park/Audubon High School. This year she is Dixie Binde of Audubon.
There were 89 quilt entries ranging in size from wall hangings to king size quilts. The quilts ranged from those made in the late 1800s to ones from 1903 and 1906 up to those made within the last few weeks. The 1903 and 1906 quilts were dated and signed with embroidery by their makers.
The contest was a viewer's choice contest with winners determined by the people attending the show with their votes.
There was a tie for first place between a blended Irish Chain quilt made by Cheryl Aune from Lake Park and her daughter, Jeanine, and a hand appliquéd quilt make by Linda Schneider of Audubon, in memory of her daughter. Cheryl won a Thimbleberries quilt donated by the Back Porch of Detroit Lakes. Linda won a rolling carrier with accessories for her sewing machine.
Third place was a beautiful handkerchief quilt made by Arlene Craig of Maine, Minn. She won a gift certificate from Mill Ends fabrics in Fargo. Fourth place was a curved log cabin quilt made by Pat Neuner of Detroit Lakes. Pat was the first place winner last year. Fifth place winner was Linda Dynan from Underwood with a festive Cinco de Mayo quill. Sixth place was a wedding ring quilt made by Debi Moltzan of Frazee. The fourth, fifth and sixth place winners all won fabric baskets.
Next year's Show and Garden Tour is tentatively set for Aug. 22. Donations may still be made to Families Forever Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 224, Lake Park, MN 56554.
