Gary D. Thompson, 62, of Lake Park, died Thursday, September 10, 2009, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, with his family by his side.
Gary Dean Thompson was born to Tilliam and Lena (Boland) Thompson on July 28, 1947 in Fargo. He grew up and attended school in Lisbon, N.D. In 1968, Gary was drafted into the United States Army, where he served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
Gary married Kathy Dunham on Jan. 23, 1971 in Ulen, Minn.; together they had three children. Gary farmed in the Lake Park area until 1992, when he began working in the construction industry. Gary was diagnosed with cancer six years ago. He had a true passion to live life and fought valiantly until the very end.
Gary enjoyed woodworking, mechanics, dancing, NASCAR, and the Old Timers Snowmobile Run. Most importantly, Gary enjoyed spending time with his family and seven precious grandchildren. Gary had a passion for helping others.
He will be missed dearly by all those who knew him; he is survived by his wife, Kathy Thompson of Lake Park; one son, Greg (Heidi) Thompson of Shoreview, Minn.; two daughters, Traci (Roy) Adams of Maplewood, Minn., and Kristen (Rich) Zima of Ogema; four brothers, Willard Thompson, Roger (Audrey) Thompson and Robert (Judy) Thompson, all of Lake Park, and James (Doris) Thompson of Wheatland, N.D.; four sisters, Doris (Kermit) Lomsdalen of Ulen, Shirley (Jon) Knudson of Lake Park, Linda (Jerry) Gerner of Moorhead, and Jan (Jim) Phillips of Moorhead; seven grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Donald Thompson.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at Lake Park Lutheran Church in Lake Park, with interment in Lake Park Lutheran Church Cemetery.
