A good baseball team relies on each other when one facet of the game isn’t going well.

For the top-seeded Detroit Lakes baseball team, it was senior pitcher Tyler Gebhart who picked up the slumping Laker offense, while the defense behind him had his back in a 3-0 victory over No. 8 Pelican Rapids in the opening round of the Section 8-2A playoffs Thursday.

Gebhart just missed pitching a perfect game, sans one hit and one hit batter, which came on his second pitch of the game.

The Laker ace already has one no-hitter on the season, which came against Staples-Motley in the second game of the season inside the Metrodome.

“I was using my curves a lot more than I usually do, but they were working well,” Gebhart said. “The defense behind me is also been great. There haven’t been any errors and that is a big help.”

Besides Logan Knorr’s single through the third base and shortstop gap, the Vikings had no other success against the side-armer, who had no walks and three strikeouts.

The Lakers had just enough offense in the fifth inning to score all three of their runs on a pair of timely, back-to-back two-out hits.

The game-deciding rally was ignited by a one-out Ryan Cihak single, which was followed by an error on the Viking defense.

After Viking pitcher Patrick Coleman – who gave up just five hits and walked none – forced a pop out to first base, leadoff hitter Taylor Magnuson hit a scorcher up the middle to score Cihak.

An errant throw to first base on Magnuson’s hit allowed Jackson Lyngaas to up the lead to 2-0.

Nick Groth then picked up his RBI double to score Magnuson from third base to conclude the scoring.

“That’s our two seniors coming up big,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. “We didn’t hit very well today, but we did pick up some timely hits.”

The victory advances the Lakers (15-3) to the double elimination portion of the tournament. They played two games in Perham Saturday and if DL wins at least one, they will play Tuesday in Crookston.
