Finally, it was time to play real ball for the Detroit Lakes baseball team.

After over two weeks of losing the start of their 2013 season, the Lakers were able to open their schedule, they just had to travel a ways to do it.

DL split a Mid-State Conference doubleheader Monday with Staples-Motley inside the Metrodome in Minneapolis, as the Lakers shook off the dust and rust under the Teflon.

The Lakers scored in only two innings of the two games, but it was enough to win the second game 11-0 in six innings behind the no-hitter pitched by senior Tyler Gebhart.

He just missed a perfect game, but walked one in the game.

“Tyler’s fastball was working well for him and he was hitting his locations,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. “He just had good movement on his pitches, but the defense also caught the ball behind him.”

Gebhart struck out four, while the Lakers didn’t commit an error on defense.

Offensively, DL’s bats were silent heading into the top of the sixth inning, where they came screaming alive with seven hits — three of them of the extra base variety — while scoring all 11 of their runs.

“The guys got on a roll in the sixth inning and it built from there,” Fuhs said. “Batters one through nine hit well and made contact.”

Two seniors, catcher Kirk McLeod and Taylor Magnuson each railed triples in the spacious Metrodome gaps. Magnuson’s shot was a three-run triple, which opened the game up for the Lakers.

DL collected nine hits in the win, as Jackson Lyngaas and Ryan Cihak each had two.

The Cardinals took advantage of five Laker errors in the opening game, as senior A.J. Matter took the loss on the mound.

The Lakers also only managed three hits, two of them coming in their three-run sixth inning, as Ben Thompson hit a two-run triple, along with an RBI single by Nick Groth.

But Staples-Motley answered with two more tallies in the bottom of the frame thanks to two DL errors.

“Staples-Motley threw a good lefty at us (Jalen Busker) and we ended up with 14 strikeouts,” Fuhs said. “That’s too many strikeouts and we also made way too many errors.”

But overall, the main focus was that the schedule is finally underway, as the Lakers will hope for sun-shiny skies all this weekend, so they can potentially host Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday in a doubleheader.

“We have to thank the DL Youth Baseball Association for paying for the rental of the Dome and our meals,” Fuhs said. “It was a great experience for the kids, something most high school players don’t get to experience.”
