The community of Perham is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Turtle Fest, which concludes today (Sunday) with a breakfast at Lakes Café, 8 a.m. to noon; Wood Bat Legion Baseball tournament, with games at 10 a.m., noon, 2 and 4 p.m. at Krueger Field; an all-day Turtle Fest Softball Tournament; and a "Heavenly Hackers" Golf Tournament from 2 to 6 p.m.

A Detroit Lakes summer tradition for the past several years, the Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series continues June 23 with a 7 p.m. performance by Doc & the Scrubs. Other upcoming performers will include Mark Fogelson, June 30; Doc & the Scrubs, July 7; Tim Eggebraaten, July 21; Crashing Down, July 28; Purple Pan Steel Drum Band, Aug. 4; Ulen Community Band, Aug. 11; Doc & the Scrubs, Aug. 18; and the Lakes Area Community Concert Band, Aug. 25. All concerts will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the City Park Bandshell, and are free and open to the public. Detroit Lakes' first-ever Shakespeare in the Park presentation opens this Friday, June 26 at the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell, with a 7:30 p.m. performance of the classic romantic comedy "The Taming of the Shrew." Additional performances are set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27; Thursday, July 2; and Friday, July 3. There will also be Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on June 28 and July 5. All performances are free and open to the public. There will be a free will offering taken during each show, but no tickets are necessary. Singer-songwriter Tim Mahoney will perform with his band at Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes (402 West Lake Drive) on Friday, June 26, at 9 p.m., as part of Zorbaz' 40th Birthday Party. On Friday, June 26 at 8 p.m., aviation historian Noel Allard will be at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham. His lecture and slide show is a dramatic account of events the night of Sept. 6, 1958 when a B-52 bomber, on a training mission from Limestone, Maine, with the objective to radar-bomb Minneapolis-St. Paul, lost flight control and crashed in Inver Grove Heights. Mr. Allard will speak about the immediate and later results of the crash and how 38 years later, in September 1996, he and a group of veterans and aviation persons established a monument to honor the deceased crewmembers. Moorhead's Hjemkomst Center is gearing up to celebrate the 32nd Annual Scandinavian Hjem-komst Festival, June 26-29. The festival, which hosts roughly 6,500 visitors each year, will highlight Finnish culture. Festival pass commemorative buttons, good for all three days of the event, are available online at www.FargoStuff.com, or at the Hjemkomst Center, for $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Lake Park-Audubon Community Education hosts the F/M Kicks Big Band on Saturday, June 27 from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Lake Park American Legion. Proceeds will go to support the community education programs at LPA. Tickets are $10 and available at 439-3303.

Plans are taking shape for New York Mills' 125th anniversary celebration, "Blast From the Past," set for the holiday weekend of July 3-5. There will be a Lund Boats Fishing Tournament, parade and street dance, all on Friday, July 3; pancake breakfast, a classic car show, ball game and fireworks on Saturday, July 4; and a community picnic, judging of the beard growing contest, coed softball, and both bagpipe and barbershop music performances, all set for Sunday, July 5. There will also be tours of the Lund Boats plant, a historic photograph display at the Cultural Center, free swimming and more.

A new exhibit at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham features the stories of U.S. Latinos and Latinas who served in World War II. Through images and stories, this twelve-panel exhibition provides a historical overview of U.S. Latino participation in World War II. In addition to historical photographs, "Images of Valor" incorporates contemporary photographs of men and women of the WWII generation by photojournalist Valentino Mauricio and focuses on individual stories that reveal larger themes such as citizenship and civil rights. The Bearclaw Muzzleloaders of Northern Minnesota Annual Rendez- vous is July 18-19 at the Height of Land Sports-mans Club. Reenactment of pre-1840 and competitions will be held throughout the day.
