'Giant Peach' at Holmes on Thursday

The United Way Community Celebration takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion. The event will include live entertainment, hot turkey sandwiches, free blood pressure checks, pi?atas and balloons for the kids, displays from United Way's 40-odd community partners, and more. The event is open to the public at no cost, though donations to the United Way will be gratefully accepted.

James & Giant Peach
Two performances of the children's play "James & the Giant Peach" will be presented at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Roald Dahl's memorable characters, including young James Trotter, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Centipede, Miss Spider and more will leap from the page to the stage in this musical fantasy from Two Beans Productions, presented by Theatreworks USA. Lake Park's 16th annual Pumpkin Fest celebration gets underway today at 5 p.m., with pumpkin contest registration at the Lake Park City Center and judging for the yard decorating contest. The Lil' Miss Pumpkin Fest Contest begins at 7 p.m. in Lake Park Lutheran Church.
Rock group Survivor comes to Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino for an 8 p.m. show. Colossal hits like "Eye of the Tiger" and "The Search is Over" have assured this band's position as legends of rock and roll. The band continues to tour with sold-out concerts around the world, with lifelong fans reliving this timeless and influencial piece of music history. Lake Park's 16th annual Pumpkin Fest celebration concludes today with a harvest breakfast at 7 a.m., Youth Rummage Sale, Garden Club Produce Sale, Craft Show at Fire Bay and Pumpkin Contest Display, all starting at 8 a.m.; Kids' Pedal Tractor Pull at 8:30 a.m.; Dunk Tank at 9 a.m.; Old Time Plowing Bee, Classic Car Show and Tractor Display all starting at 9:30 a.m.; 5K & 10K Run/Walk, Horseshoe Tournament and Treat Tasting all starting at 10 a.m.; Kids' Games starting at 10:45 a.m.; Kids' Carnival and Pumpkin Pie Polka Walk both starting at 11 a.m.; Kiddie Parade at 1:30 p.m.; Pumpkin Fest Parade at 2 p.m.; Firemen's Brat Feed at 3 p.m.; and karaoke at the Lake Park Liquor Store starting at 8 p.m. There is also a free horse-drawn shuttle service available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
'The USO Show'
Tickets are still available for 'The USO Show' at the ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham. This year's annual banquet for the Friends of the History Museum of East Otter Tail County will be a nostalgic journey back in time with a popular re-enactment of the classic USO Show. After the show there will be dancing in the 'canteen' until 11 p.m. Drinks will be served by the East Otter Tail Historical Society. Tickets are $15 per person. Sunday, Sept. 28
Swedish/American pianist and comedian Magnus Martensson performs Scandinavian piano music at 7 p.m. in the First Lutheran Church, 619 Broadway, Fargo. The public is invited. Admission is a free-will offering at the door. Martensson is currently the conductor of The Scandinavian Chamber Orchestra of New York.
Haiti Mercy Mission concert
A gospel concert for Haiti Mercy Mission featuring Dick McLaughlin, Rich Haldorson, Janice Ramsey, Joyce Anderson, Kim Schnitzer and Vicki Marthaler is at 4 p.m. in the Assembly of God Church, DL. A love offering will be taken for orphans at Pignon, Haiti. Coffee and bars will be served after concert.
An Oktoberfest German Dinner will be held at the Elk's Club, 647 Jefferson Street North in Wadena from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The dinner is sponsored by the Wadena County Historical Society and the Wadena Deer Creek German Club, to celebrate the German culture in the area and to welcome German students from Wadena-Deer Creek's partner school in Menden, Germany who are in Minnesota for a two-week educational exchange. At 1 p.m. the local German Club will give a dramatic presentation called "Sophie's Journey," the story of a young girl emigrating to America in 1914. There will be a free will offering taken.

'Iron Jawed Angels'
A free screening of the movie "Iron Jawed Angels" will be held at The Avenue in downtown Detroit Lakes, starting at 7 p.m. There will be a 6 p.m. social. Co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Master Mind Study Group of Detroit Lakes, this educational event will include a discussion following the movie.
