Yes, once again, it's Girl Scout Cookie season.

From now through March 6, local Brownie, Junior and Cadette scout troops will be going door to door, selling boxes and boxes of 11 delicious varieties of cookies.

But this year, the Girl Scouts in Detroit Lakes' 12 registered scout troops (including Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes) are joining forces on a special project: A "cookie care package" for the troops in Iraq.

Through the Scouts' Cookie Share program, area residents can donate a box or two of cookies to the Minnesota National Guard troops currently serving in Iraq.

"Those who want to make a donation for the troops can order boxes of cartwheels, shortbread, peanut butter sandwiches or lemonades (four different varieties)," said Karen Skoyles, service unit manager for the Detroit Lakes Girl Scouts.

Because the boxes will be shipped overseas, and could take a few weeks to arrive, the Scouts are asking that cookies for the troops not include any chocolate or chocolate-covered varieties -- as they could melt before they reach their destination, Skoyles explained.

All of the boxes designated for the troops will be packaged immediately upon delivery for shipment overseas.

"The Family Readiness Support Association of Detroit Lakes will be handling the shipping," Skoyles added.

All cookie orders are expected to be delivered from the bakers in mid-April.

Of course, cookies can also be ordered for personal use: the price is $4 per box, no matter which variety is chosen. Boxes to be included in the shipment to Iraq should be designated for the troops in the initial order.

Skoyles also noted that cookies may be donated to the Becker County Food Pantry as well.

Proceeds from the cookie sales help to fund troop activities and programs of the regional council, Skoyles added. The council provides programming, support and training for scout leaders as well as some funding for summer camp activities.

Though most cookie orders are done through door-to-door sales or word of mouth, those who would like to make an order and have not been contacted should get in touch with a local Girl Scout leader.

All cookie orders must be completed by March 6.
