Girls Basketball: Lady Hornets split to go 6-4
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

The Frazee Lady Hornet basketball team let a big halftime lead slip away as they lost at Park Rapids 68-63 last Thursday, but they bounced back with a nice 55-42 victory over Crookston at Concordia on Saturday.

Frazee (6-4) and Crookston (4-6) each struggled from the field in the first half as the Pirates claimed the halftime lead at 23-22.

The game remained close in the early stages of the second half until the Lady Hornets went on a big run.

With Crookston leading 33-30, Kennady Barlund scored eight straight points as Frazee went on a 20-2 run to take control of the game. Barlund scored 18 of her game-high 19 points in the second half. She also added nine rebounds and five steals.

“We did a nice job of getting the ball to Kennady in some good spots on the floor and she took advantage as she was 7-for-8 shooting in the half and was also 4-for-4 from the free throw line,” Frazee head coach Dave Conzemius said. “We have so many girls that are capable of going out and scoring for us and tonight Kennady stepped up and played an outstanding game.”

Josi Tappe chipped in with 15 points and three steals, Hailee Oswald had nine points on three 3-pointers and Taylor Tappe added seven points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals.

“This is a very good win after a tough loss on Thursday,” Conzemius said.

Frazee played a solid first half Thursday night at Park Rapids as Josi and Taylor Tappe and Hailee Oswald combined for 32 first half points as the Lady Hornets took a 43-24 halftime lead.

Scoring was slow for both teams to start the second half. Frazee still led by 18 points 54-36 with about 10 minutes left when the wheels fell off the bus for the Lady Hornets.

Barlund picked up her fourth foul and was forced to the bench. Taylor Tappe cramped up in her leg with 8:30 left in the game and missed all but the last 30 seconds of the game.

To make matters worse, the Panthers got hot from the floor and eventually took the lead from Frazee.

Park Rapids (4-5) led by one point in the last minute when they scored on a rebound and hit two free throws to put the game away as they won 68-63.

“I give credit to Park Rapids as they played very well in the second half,” Conzemius said. “Everything that could have gone wrong down the stretch did go wrong and we did not respond very well. Hopefully we can learn from this and become a better team.”

Josi Tappe led Frazee with 20 points and four steals. Taylor Tappe, despite missing over eight minutes of the second half, added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Barlund had eight points, 11 rebounds and five assists and Oswald also had eight points.

Frazee will host Hawley on Friday night.
