The Frazee Lady Hornets used to a big second half run to help them secure a 68-53 victory over Bagley on Thursday night in Frazee.

Frazee led at halftime by a score of 33-30 and trailed 36-35 early in the second half before a quick 12-0 run, which was spurred by some pesky full court defense, lifted the Lady Hornets to the win.

“We didn’t have very good focus early in the game and we struggled to get any momentum going,” head coach Dave Conzemius said. “Mandy Donahue really held us in the first half as she scored eight of our first 10 points.

In the second half, we were able to turn them over a few times and it led to easy baskets for us and we just kind of took off from there.”

Kennady Barlund led Frazee with 16 points and she also added seven rebounds and five steals. Josi Tappe had 14 points, four assists and three steals, Hailee Oswald had 12 points and six rebounds, and Taylor Tappe just missed a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Bagley (4-2 overall) was led by Kari Skersick with 30 points.

The Lady Hornets and Barnesville Trojans played a back and forth game on Tuesday night in Barnesville.

Frazee however, made a couple of important plays down the stretch to hand the Trojans their first loss of the season 58-56 in Heart O’Lakes conference action.

“This is a great win for our young ladies over a quality opponent on the road,” Conzemius said. “We competed very hard and did the little things down the stretch that lead to wins. We made a couple of important defensive stops and we executed well offensively down the stretch to get some good shots at the basket.”

The game was close throughout with each having their biggest lead at seven points. Frazee (5-3 overall, 1-2 HOL) led 47-40 in the second half when Barnesville (6-1 overall, 2-1 HOL) went on a 10-0 run to take 50-47 lead. Taylor Tappe answered with a three-pointer to tie the game to set up a wild finish.

With the score tied at 54-54, Josi Tappe hit a driving layup with about 30 seconds left for the Lady Hornets. The Trojans quickly answered on the other end to tie it up again.

Frazee once again got the ball to Josi Tappe and she hit another driving layup with just under 10 seconds left. Barnesville had a shot to tie or win but only got off a contested shot from just inside the top of the key.

Josi Tappe led Frazee with a career-high 31 points on 14-for-25 shooting from the floor. Taylor Tappe had another solid floor game with 12 points, 15 rebounds and six assists.

“Josi had a monster game offensively but Taylor was really the key for us tonight with her leadership and effort,” Conzemius said. “She really sets the tone for us and gets us going. All of the kids that played tonight made some big plays during the game to allow us to get this victory.”
