Girls Basketball: Otters too much for Lakers
A span of foul trouble put a major kink in the Detroit Lakes girls’ basketball team’s plans Tuesday, after playing the top-ranked and undefeated Fergus Falls Otters tough midway through the first half.
But with four of DL’s five starters on the bench due to foul trouble, the Otters opened a 13-10 lead to a 41-24 halftime margin, en route to a comfortable 75-55 win.
“Defensively, our girls were doing a great job midway through the first half,” said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. “They were matching up well with Fergus and rebounding well.
“But when we got into foul trouble, we couldn’t stay with them.”
The Otters (8-0) reinforced their halftime lead with a 7-0 run to start the second half, which was more than enough of an advantage to keep the Lakers at bay the remainder of the game.
Fergus Falls’ combo of Bailey Strand and Brianna Rasmusson knocked down their perimeter shots, with the former going for 26 points and the latter 134.
Forward Anna Monke had 12 points inside, with senior guard Devonie Smith contributing 10 points.
“Towards the end of the game, our subs did a nice job finishing, which I’m proud of them for doing that,” Hoganson added.
Junior post Shay Nielsen worked hard in the paint for 12 points, while each of junior point guard and sophomore post Grace Swenson had nine points.
The Lakers (4-4) will host Pelican Rapids (9-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Bemidji (3-6) Saturday for a 6 p.m. start.
