The Detroit Lakes girls’ track and field team had the best of both worlds during the Section 8 True Team meet at Mollberg Field Tuesday.

Not only did they have the best day weather-wise to defend their section championship, they boasted the deepest team, as well as the top talented team.

All that rolled into one event resulted in a dominating win for the Lakers, as they beat second-place Park Rapids by 94.5 points to earn their second-straight berth in the State True Team meet, Saturday, May 18, in Stillwater.

“With our depth, we were able to maximize our points throughout the team,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine. “The girls’ attitude wasn’t about ‘me’, but what can they do collectively as a team to win the meet.”

The Lakers won eight events, including three relay events, while capturing numerous top five and 10 finishes that added to their total.

Even when Lakers were competing out of their usual event, they did well.

“We took our top kids who could do multiple events and moved them around, and they all went out and did their absolute best,” Labine said.

Sophomore Kyley Foster scored a sweep in the hurdles, winning the 100 event with a 16.13 and the 300 at 47.46.

“Kyley responded to the challenge and that is being a leader,” Labine said.

Sophomore Allison Berg also looks to be back on form after a year’s worth of injuries, as she won the high jump with a 5-01, while sophomore Shay Nielsen won the shot put hands down with a throw of 39-04.75.

Addie Kay Johnson won the 400 dash, while Lindsey Heinecke took second in each the 100 and 200 dash events.

“Lindsey’s strongest event is the 400, but we were able to move her to the 100 and 200, along with the relays, because we felt Addie Kay could win the 400,” Labine said of the team’s depth.

The 4x200 (Simona Woodard, Hailey Jorgenson, Sarah Halbakken and Heinecke) took gold, as did the 4x400 (Johnson, Halbakken, Karissa Berg and Abby Ullyott).

The 4x800 team of Sarah Schumacher, Rachel Wentz, Megan Ostlie and Ullyott also scored first-place points.

“I asked the 4x800 relay team to set the tone for the day to start the meet, and they went out and dominated that event,” Labine said.

The distance races also went well, with personal-best times in every event.

“We needed both kids in each event to place in the top five, and they went out and had phenomenal races,” the DL coach said.
