After back-to-back tie games, the Detroit Lakes girls’ hockey team ensured there would be no extra period in Monday’s make-up game against visiting Wadena-Deer Creek, winning 4-0 to improve to 5-6-4 on the season.

A three-goal second period put DL in firm control 4-0, while goalie Veronica Badurek had 13 saves in the third period to prevent another comeback by W-DC (7-12-1), which tied the Lakers last week after trailing 3-0 and snaring three goals in the final period to force the tie.

DL’s leading scorer forward Hailey Sonstegard completed her first natural hat trick of the season, after scoring 10:44 into the first period, and then backed that up with consecutive goals in the second to put the Lakers up 3-0.

Randa Larsen added DL’s fourth goal with just 1:38 left in the period.

Assists were dished out by Savanna Nolan, with three of the four goals coming on unassisted efforts.

Badurek finished with 39 saves in the game, while W-DC goalie Angela Hanson had 28.

The Lakers made the big rally in the final period to salvage a 3-3 tie in Fergus Falls (5-10-2).

The Otters outshot the Lakers 17-9 in the first two periods, with Lauren Norgren putting two power play goals past Badurek in the second, while Sydney Kuehl had a power play tally in the first period.

But the Lakers started chipping away early in the third with Emily Seebold finding the net on an assist by Larsen.

That sparked the Lakers into comeback mode, as Hannah Rhodes had a power play score 11:11 into the period, with Sonstegard tying the game up 43 seconds later.

The Otters put five shots on net in the extra period, but Badurek was up to the task.

The Lakers will host Crookston (5-12-1) Thursday, starting at 7:15 p.m.
